Introduction

CPE stands for Continuing Professional Education. CPE credits (or CPE hours) are a metric that measures how far along an individual is in his/her CRISC credential. How Can I Earn CRISC CPEs?

ISACA offers several opportunities to obtain CPE credits through participation in various events and programs.

ISACA’s inclusive and dynamic Conferences keep the candidates abreast of the latest advances in the realm of IT professions. CRISC holders can earn up to 32 CPEs per event participation.

ISACA’s Online Training (or On-Demand Learning) offers online review courses. The candidate can earn up to 26 CPEs per course. The online course covers all the four domains of CRISC. The training incorporates case study activities, downloadable job aids, interactive workbooks, downloadable material, interactive eLearning modules, videos, and pre- and post-course assessments. Online Training also includes:

• Cybersecurity Fundamentals Online Course

Through ISACA’s Training Courses, the candidate can earn up to 32 CPEs per course. Training courses have different categories, including:

What are Some Free Ways I Can Earn CRISC CPEs?

The best part of earning CPE hours is the availability of some methods that don’t cost money. The candidate can obtain CPE credits hinging on his/her preferences. Besides, ISACA membership offers several benefits to the CRISC professionals. For example, ISACA certified members receive totally free 72 CPEs per year.

Web-based courses and online events prepare candidates for the exam and offer opportunities to gain CPE hours. Webinars and Virtual Conferences can provide opportunities to earn up to 36 free CPEs per year. The candidate can earn one (1) free CPE credit by attending each webinar. Online virtual conferences are full-day educational events that include a conference hall, exhibit hall, resource center, and networking lounge.

Candidate can also earn 10 free CPEs per year through Certification Mentoring. Certification mentoring is the willingness of the CRISCs to mentor (help and advise over an extended period of time) other professionals who are aspiring to obtain CRISC certification. The CRISC can earn one CPE hour for each hour of mentoring efforts. Mentoring efforts are related to coaching, assisting or reviewing an individual with CRISC exam preparation. Since mentoring is a learning experience for the CRISC, ISACA’s Credentialing Board approved the recognition of ISACA certification mentoring as a qualifying activity for obtaining CPE credits for his/her CRISC credential. Certification mentoring can also be applied to ISACA’s other certifications, including CISA, CISM, and CGEIT.

In addition, the candidates can earn 20 free CPEs per year by serving as an ISACA volunteer. He/she can obtain one (1) CPE hour (up to 20 per year) for each hour of an active participation on ISACA or ITGI board, volunteer project, working group, or as an ISACA chapter officer.

Candidate can also gain 6 free CPEs per year by participating in Journal Quizzes. Please note that only member candidates can utilize this service. A passing score of 75% on each quiz qualifies for one (1) hour of CPE hours (up to 6 CPEs per year).

How Do I Calculate CRISC CPE Credits?

The candidate can earn one (1) CPE hour for each fifty (50) minutes of active participation (except breaks and lunches) for qualifying ISACA and non-ISACA educational professional meetings and activities. Students can obtain CPE hours in quarter-hour increments and can report in quarter hours, rounded to the nearest quarter hour. For instance, a candidate will earn 10 (10.4) CPE hours if he/she attends a ten 10-hour presentation (600 minutes) with eighty (80 minutes) of breaks. Below is the mathematical technique that spells out how to calculate CPE hours of above example.

Time spent = 10 hours

Calculating spent time in minutes = 10 × 60 = 600 minutes

Break time = 80 minutes

We know that break and lunch times will be excluded, hence:

Net minutes = 600 – 80 = 520 minutes

CPE hours = 520 ÷ 50 = 10.4

CPE hours = 10 (rounded to the nearest quarter hour)

Have There Been Any CRISC CPE Policy Changes Recently?

Yes. ISACA has made changes to its all certification CPE policies recently, including CRISC, CISA, CISM, and CGEIT. According to changes made on January 1, 2014, twice the number of CPE hours are obtained for each examination hour when the passing score is accomplished on a related professional examination. Prior to January 1, 2014, only one (1) CPE hour was earned for each examination hour. For example, if a CRISC-certified professional passed a related examination that was four (4) hours in length, he/she would earn four (4) CPE hours. In case of current policy, the same candidate will earn eight (8) CPE hours.

What Are the CRISC CPE Guidelines?

Once you have earned your CPE credits, you need to report them annually and over a fixed three-year period in order to review your certification. Below are the guidelines that spell out how to report your CPEs:

• Log in at isaca.org
• Click on “MY ISACA”
• Click on “My CERTIFICATIONS”
• Click on “Manage My CPE”
• Scroll down and then click on “Add CPE” button
• Enter CPE activity information and click “Save.”

Moreover, the CRISC CPE policy requires the candidates to attain CPE credits over an annual and 3-year certification period. In order to retain their certifications, all CRISCs must follow some requirements that include:

• Earn and report a minimum of 120 CPE credits for a 3-year reporting period and obtain and report an annual minimum of 20 CPE credits.
• The CRISCs must submit annual CPE maintenance payment to ISACA’s international headquarters in full.
• If your documentation of CPE activities is required for your annual audit, you must respond and submit it to the concerned authorities.

If the candidate fails to comply with CRISC CPE policy, his/her certification will be revoked immediately and then he/she will be required to take and pass the CRISC exam again.
