Introduction

The Security+ certification is offered by CompTIA, a non-profit association headquartered in Downers Grove, Illinois, near Chicago. In addition to Security+, CompTIA also offers several other entry-level, foundational, and master-level certifications, including CompTIA A+, Cloud+, CSA+, Linux+, Mobility+ (which will be officially retired on December 15, 2017), Network+, Project+, Server+, IT fundamentals, CDIA+ (a cert that has been retired since December 1, 2017), Cloud Essentials, CASP, and CTT+. CompTIA A+

CompTIA A+ (exam codes 220-901 and 220-902) is a powerful IT credential for establishing the first steps of an IT pathway. It was launched on 15 December, 2015. This certification is specifically designed to test mastery of varied IT technologies, including mobile devices, PC hardware, network connectivity, and hardware troubleshooting issues, and operating systems such as Android, iOS, Apple OS X, Windows, and Linux. A+ certified professionals can confidently deal with the challenging technology issues effectively and efficiently. Governments and enterprises worldwide are continually adopting cloud and mobile technologies and, therefore, have skyrocketing demand for A+ certified professionals.

CompTIA Cloud+

The CompTIA Cloud+ CV0-001 is a vendor-neutral certification that validates the expertise and skills of IT professionals in maintaining and implementing cloud technologies, including infrastructure, security, virtualization, resources management, and business continuity. The Cloud+ exam was launched on December 15, 2015.

Accreditation: The Cloud+ certification is compliant with the ISO-17024 standard.

Job Roles: The Cloud+ professionals can work in any of the following job roles:

  • Cloud specialist
  • Cloud developer
  • Systems and network administrator

Exam Details: The Cloud+ exam includes 100 multiple choice questions that the candidates have to complete within 90 minutes. A passing score is 750 on a scale of 100-900. The price for the exam is $294. A candidate must have 24-36 months of work experience in networking, as well as IT data center administration or storage. Knowing hypervisor technologies is a plus.

CompTIA CSA+

CompTIA Cybersecurity Analyst (CSA+) CS0-001 is another of CompTIA’s vendor-neutral certifications, validating skills and knowledge required to prevent and detect cybersecurity threats. Earning potential: The Bureau of Labor Statistics reveals that the salary for an information security analyst (CSA+ professional) is $90,120 per year.

CompTIA Network+

CompTIA Network+ N10-006 is a vendor-neutral certification that certifies the skills and knowledge required to design, configure, manage, and troubleshoot wired and wireless network devices. The Network+ exam also covers some emerging technologies, including unified communications, cloud, mobile, and virtualization. This exam was launched on February 28, 2015. Accreditation: Like CSA+, The CompTIA Network+ certification is also compliant with the ISO-17024 standard and is approved by the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) to meet 8740/8570.01M requirements. Furthermore, this certification also meets government directives under the Federal Information Security Management Act.

Exam Details: The Network+ exam consists of 90 questions and length of the test is 90 minutes. The exam involves performance-based, multiple-choice, and drag-and-drop questions. Passing score is 720 on a scale of 100-900. Also, the candidates must have CompTIA A+ certification and at least nine months of networking experience before taking the Network+ exam. The price for this exam is $294.

Earning Potential: According to Global Knowledge’s IT skills and salary report, Network+ certified professionals can earn up to $74,000.

The CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner (CASP)

The CompTIA CASP CAS-002 certification is a vendor-neutral and expert-level credential that provides the best information security solutions for both government agencies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). The CASP exam covers enterprise security, risk management and incident response, research and analysis, integration of computing, communication, and business disciplines, technical integration of enterprise components. CompTIA will introduce the new version of CASP, CAS-003, on April 2, 2018.

Accreditation: Like CSA+ and Network+, the CompTIA CASP certification is also compliant with the ISO-17024 standard and is approved by the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) to meet 8740/8570.01M requirements. In addition, this certification meets government directives under the Federal Information Security Management Act.

This exam also requires 10 years of experience in IT administration, including at least five years of hands-on technical security experience. The price for the exam is $426.
