CASP-certified professionals must keep their CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner (CASP) certification up-to-date with CompTIA’s Continuing Education (CE) program. Your up-to-date credential certifies that you have expertise with regard to the modern trends of enterprise security, risk management, incident response, research and analysis, integration of computing, and technical integration of enterprise components.
Moreover, in the dynamic field of information technology, new challenges and opportunities are emerging every day. Therefore, participating in the CE program ensures that you keep current with your skills and keeps you abreast of new technologies, providing you opportunities for career advancement in the IT realm. This article covers all of the significant information that will help you in maintaining your CASP certification.
What are the CASP Renewals Requirements?
Your CASP credential is valid for 3 yearsfrom the day you pass your CASP exam. After that, a certified person will renew his/her certification through CompTIA’s Continuing Education (CE) program. If you have forgotten your expiration date, login to your account in order to find a certification record. Using automatic renewal, you can renew your credential by obtaining a minimum of 75 CEUs in 3 years. A certain number of Continuing Education Unit (CEU) credits (such as 75 for CASP) are required to renew CompTIA’s certification programs. To earn CEUs, you need to participate in approved activities that will be discussed in the subsequent section. These activities must fulfill following requirements:
Timing—you must complete activities during your 3-year renewal period.
Relevance—at least 50% of the activity contents must relate to one or more exam domains/objectives for your CASP certification renewal.
Documentation—you should provide documentation of the activities to earn CEUs.
If you earn a CASP certification and don’t renew it by your expiration date, you will have to retest in order to regain your certification status.
In addition, the annual CE charges are $50, or $150 for 3 years. Furthermore, the CASP CE program (like CASP itself) also attains globally recognized ISO/ANSI accreditation status.
In addition to CASP, many candidates also hold CompTIA’s other certifications at the same time. Under such circumstances, they only need to satisfy the renewal requirements for the highest-level certification, not for each one. When you meet the renewal requirements for your highest-level certification, your lower-level credentials will renew as well automatically.
What are Activity Options for Renewal?
There are several activity options whereby you can renew your CASP certification. These activity options are listed below.
Training and Higher Education:
Attend a conference
Attend a live webinar
Complete a training course [InfoSec Institute offers courses that can be used for CE credit]
Complete an American Council on Education (ACE) course
Complete a college course
IT Industry Participation:
Join in a CompTIA exam development workshop as a Subject Matter Expert (SME)
Create an instructional material
Mentor or teach
Publish a book, blog post, white paper, or a relevant industry article.
Additional IT Certifications:

Obtain a non-CompTIA IT certification
How Do I Submit My Completed Activities?
You can submit your completed activities either through manual submission or by automated submission.
Manual Submission—doing so requires you to log into your CASP certification account where you can submit your approved activities and then receive your CEUs.
Automated Submission—CompTIA will automatically renew your certification when you complete one of the following activities:
Obtain a highest-level CompTIA certification
Pass the most current or latest release of your CompTIA certification (such as CASP CAS-003 exam).
Pass the CompTIA’s recertification exam
Complete CompTIA’s CertMaster CE
What Do I Need to Know About the CASP Retake Policy?
If you have been failed in the first attempt of your CompTIA CASP examination, then you can retake the exam forthwith without any delay in your second attempt. However, if your second attempt or any subsequent attempt is unsuccessful, then you will have to wait for the 14 calendar days from the day of your last attempt to make another attempt.
The current version of CASP exam is CAS-002, which will end on October 2, 2018. If you have passed the CAS-002 exam, you cannot take this exam again to recertify yourself. Instead, you have to wait for next CASP series, which is CAS-003. Its inauguration date is April 2, 2018.
If you violate the CompTIA retake policy, your certification could be suspended for a certain period. However, repeated violations may trigger you barred from taking the CASP exam again.
Moreover, you will pay the exam price for each attempt. CompTIA doesn’t offer any discounts or free re-tests on retake exams.
How Long Will the CASP Certification Remain Relevant?
On November 20, 2017, Jennifer Sherwood revealed in her cybersecurity article, which has also been published on CompTIA’s official website, that cybersecurity careers are always evolving to prevent cybercriminals and hackers from growing because they continually discover new ways to compromise systems. Jennifer also added that the cybersecurity career can be built through a CASP certification exam.
Over the past many years, it has been observed that the emergence of cybersecurity threats was a constant phenomenon. Even the most sophisticated information security mechanisms were unable to put an end to cyber-attacks and even their reduction was once in a blue moon. As ever, an overwhelming number of cyber-attacks have been reported last year. For example, Mark Ray (2017) divulged that malicious actors exploited a vulnerability and carried out a culpable cyber-attack against Equifax Inc., one of the three major credit reporting organizations in the United States.
Since cybersecurity threats are persistent and inevitable, cybersecurity professionals are needed forever to meet the IT security needs of enterprises. Your CASP certification always proves you a top-notch cybersecurity engineer and ensures the longevity of your IT career. In addition, your up-to-date CASP credential keeps you abreast of new evolving IT technologies, the latest trends and innovations to ensure that your IT skills meet the rapidly growing demand of enterprises. If you follow these regulations, your CASP certification is good forever.
